The history of Pokémon TCG in SoMD is being written right now. To learn about some of the things that have already happened, check out the SoMD Pokémon TCG Wiki.
What is a League?
Leagues are locations designated by Pokémon Organized Play as places to play. Players come to trade cards and play a few games. League Leaders are there to give out prizes for those who participate. You can get prizes just for signing up! Most leagues are completely free, including Aardvark Gym. Newcomers are welcome to come to learn how to play. The League Leaders will be there to help you out.
Where can I find a League?
This page shows you the places to play in Southern Maryland. If you don’t live in SoMD, there is a league locator on the Pokémon Organized Play website.
I don't know how to play. What should I do?
Don't know how to play? Not a problem! That's what the League Leader is there for. After you sign up, the LL can teach you how to play, and help you build a 60-card deck to play with.
What is Pokémon Organized Play?
The POP website does a pretty good job explaining it.
What is Modified?
Some Pokémon TCG tournaments use the Modified format. In Modified tournaments, players may only use cards from the most recent sets. The definition of Modified is usually updated once a year. The definition of the current Modified format can be found here. Pokémon Organized Play established the Modified format to: 1. Ensure the game is constantly changing with the introduction of new cards and a limited card pool. 2. Accommodate newcomers who would have trouble acquiring older cards. 3. Maintain sales of the newer cards.
There's a something I don't know about a card. What should I do?
If you ever have any doubt about how a card works or have some rules question, it is a good idea to talk to the League Leader. A good resource to check out online is the Rulings Compendium (just click which format you want to download to view it). This is an official document endorsed by Pokémon Organized Play as a source for card rulings.
What is a "My Pokémon" account and why should I get one?
Signing up for an account is completely optional and is not required to participate in leagues or tournaments. You can get a "My Pokémon" account here. You will be asked to give your address. Approximately four times a year, POP sends free rewards in the mail to those who have played in POP-sanctioned tournaments and have an account. There are other benefits to getting an account:
- Players who win travel allowances from winning Premier Events are required to have a "My Pokémon" account.
- Players who wish to be eligible for prizes based on their Premier Rating have to have an account.
- Players who wish to become Pokémon Professors/League Leaders/Tournament Organizers have to have one.
